At least, for a Conservative who isn't making 100k or more a year. In large cities a 100k isn't going to cut it either. The thing is, a lot of us don't really care about the amount of money we are making but we do care about our quality of life and we still want the option of making as much money as we're capable of.
I had always thought we were doing pretty well. We owned a house on 10 acres, had two decent vehicles (actually below average to most people, but there paid for) and "nice" things in and around our house, toys, in other words. So, I thought we were fine until we visited the county for typical vaccine shots.
We had always driven our kids to the pediatrician, 30 minutes away in a different county for check-ups, shots and so forth. On an occasion when one of the kids needed shots, I thought back to when I was a kid and my mom took me to a county office where I received the necessary shots. I told my wife that we should just go to the county office, it's a lot closer and cheaper. She didn't like it because it wasn't as nice and clean as the doctors office but she conceded.
When we arrived, we were given papers to fill out and we were told that the information we provided would determine how much the shots would cost us. We were told that at the most it would be $15 bucks! I said we would be happy to pay the $15 bucks, that would be a savings of $100 bucks+/-. However, we were still required to fill out the paper work disclosing income and other things. As it turned out the shots only cost us $8 bucks. Now, that wasn't even the eye opener, we were also informed that we were eligible for food stamps and WIC (women, infants and children; not walk-in closet).
The thought had never crossed my mind. How could a family who owned a home had two vehicles and the amount of crap around the house that we had be eligible for these services? We declined but later talked about how nice it would be to get all that free food, at least free to us. I was extra tempted after looking at the Schawn's food catalog and finding out they take the food stamp card. Just think about having steak and shrimp delivered to your house for free!
I know there are certain situations where these programs are a good safety net. All I am saying is, it's hard out there, trying to be a Conservative and not becoming dependent. Unfortunately, that is how some politicians like it.
