Conservtives Mount Up!

                            Conservatives Mount Up

Wow, what a ride over the past few days.  The Super Tuesday Primary was
disappointing to say the least.  It started out with what many saw as collusion in
West Virginia, between McCain and Huckabee, with Huckabee getting the win
after it initially looked like Romney would come out on top.  Then, Huckabee
sweeps across the southern states with victory after victory.  The southern
victories made it appear that Romney’s Mormon faith really was a negative
factor with some voters.  It also was obvious that the conservative vote was
being split and thus neutralized.  To top it all off, McCain won in California,
Romney’s firewall.

So I was down in the dumps, it was looking more and more like McCain was
going to be the Republican nominee.  I didn’t know what I was going to do.  Ann
Coulter’s plan of actually supporting Hillary Clinton, while it felt good in a
revenge sense, it just seemed too far out.  But I felt at the very least I was not
going to vote for McCain, I thought of doing a write in or really just not voting for
the President of the United States.

I am writing this assuming everyone knows why I opposed John McCain,
because it is for the same reasons that are shared with the majority of
conservatives.  But just in case, my main one is the amnesty bill.  I just can’t
wrap my mind around how a 25 year Senator from Arizona could come up with
such a bill.  The negative effects of illegal immigration are so numerous and
wide spread that I just couldn’t fathom it.  There are several other close second
place reasons but that’s numeral uno.

As down and out as I felt Tuesday night, I didn’t expect to have my voting
options defined so soon.  Then, I heard the speeches given by Senators Clinton
and Obama.  I had been so caught up in the Republican Primary that I hadn’t
paid attention to them in a while.  Of course, I knew their positions and proposed
policies but I hadn’t really listened.  Frankly, they scared the hell out of me.
Several commentators had stated that McCain won’t look so bad once the light
is shining on the Democrats and they were right!

Jump forward to the CPAC speeches.  Romney suspended his campaign and
gave his best speech to date.  John McCain, also gave a great speech and did it
in the right tone.  When Romney started out there were several confusing areas
in is political pallet.  Now he has been molded into a conservative leader and a
future star in the Republican Party.  McCain, still has to prove himself, but his
speech was a great step in the right direction.

The conservative base went out on the range roped these guys and brought
them in like a couple cattle.  Granted, McCain is a maverick and a maverick was
a cow on one of the huge Texas ranches of the 1800’s, the ranch was so big
some cows would never be rounded up, never branded, they would become
mean and even dangerous, so we need to keep the latest cattle prod with the
highest voltage available at all times, but I think he has felt the shock and can at
least now be contained.  Maybe he’ll even choose Romney as a running mate, I
think there is more chance of that now than there was before.

Only time will tell where I will be come November.  As for now, its time to put on
some chaps, cinch up the saddle, turn up the voltage and try and keep the
Maverick on our ranch.
